DOVER TOWNSHIP -- The council today agreed to seek bids from companies to start testing private wells for contamination.

Councilwoman Maria Maruca said the Windsor Park area of eastern Dover, where contamination has been found in groundwater, will be the first area to be tested under the proposal.

But Maruca said more than 1,000 private wells in the township could be tested eventually, especially if Dover is able to find a partner, like the Municipal Utilities Authority or the county Board of Freeholders, to help pay for the work.

"This contamination has spread every three to four years,'' Maruca said of the Windsor Park situation. "It's a safety issue there,'' Maruca represents Ward 1, which includes Windsor Park.
